What electric sander should I buy?

I want to paint over my existing kitchen cabinets (and some other furniture)….and I absolutely dread hand sanding a bulk of these items.
What electric sander should I buy? I am absolutely new to this and don’t know any difference between orbital sander or whatever. I just know that I don’t want it to be too heavy or I might strip away all the wood.

Other Sander Power Tools

Do you look at the rpm when you buy an air tool or electric tool?

Some make 400 torques at 7000 while others might make that at 10000rpm.

Other Sander Power Tools

I’m looking to buy new cordless power tools where every tool uses the same battery and these are my two choices. What is your opinion? Got any better suggestions? Thanks!

Other Sander Power Tools

I’m registering for a sander since I’m the handyman of our duo, and I like to refinish things like desks, dressers, etc. (I’ve even done a small sailboat). I’ve done all the sanding by hand previously, but an electric sander would make things so much easier! What type of sander would be best for these types of products? Any suggests as to brands that are good?

Sander Power Tools

Sander power tools are ideal for woodworking and sanding of other materials. The main types of these power tools belt sanders, palm sanders, detail sanders, and orbital sanders .

Belt Sanders

Belt sanders are the most common type of sander and it consists of a looped pieced of sandpaper fitted around two wheels, which rotate the sandpaper around at a very fast speed. These types of sanders can be used for sanding down rough surfaces or heavy painted surfaces that have lots of runs in the paint prior to finishing with a finer sander.

Palm Sanders

These are also referred to as finishing or pad sanders. They are constructed with a small rectangular pad on the bottom, which normally accommodates a 1/4 or 1/3 sheet of sandpaper. The palm sander vibrates in a circular motion and when used correctly, they provide an even and smooth finish. Palm sanders are normal used after the belt sander to produce a nice smooth finish.

Detail Sanders

Detail sanders, also known as contour sanders are smaller than most other handheld sanders. They are used for getting into tight, awkward spaces and sanding irregular shapes that other sanders cannot deal with. The pad is normally triangular shaped, but many of these sanders come with multiple attachments to aid in reaching even the smallest of spaces. These tools are usually used for small craft projects and even mill working, such as window and door casings.

Random Orbit Sander

Random orbit sanders are probably the most versatile sanders around. They are ideal for big and small jobs alike, and they are small enough to get into most tight spaces. These sanders have a round pad that moves in a circular motion, with a slight random motion variation to prevent swirl marks on the item being worked on. Random orbit sanders usually have a dust extraction system built in that uses a dust bag and vacuum to extract the debris as the tool is working, This is a great versatile working sander and can be used for most type of sanding job.
