Just a little update and clarification on the Ryobi 18v tool set that I keep with the off grid place, although recently I tapped into the set for a project at a house where there was no functioning electrical power (previous residents were badly behind on the electric bill). While not exactly “pro grade” stuff, it is hit and miss. A couple of “hits” are their grinder (excellent) and multi-tool (pretty good). A “miss” is the sander, but it is a low cost item anyway, just not something to professionally rely on. Kind of useful when you want it, but a loser deal to depend on – no better than the Harbor Freight model and more costly, only a keeper since it takes the same batteries as the others in the system. Remember, the NiCads are about worthless but come free with some of the tools and sets. If you decide to actually buy batteries, get the Lithium Ions. Ryobi also has an excellent (arguably the best in the business) 12 charger, so you don’t have to run an inverter in order to charge your cordless tool batteries.

Ryobi power tools are a store brand from Home Depot and while not exactly “professional grade” like some other brands, are just fine for the do it yourselfer who needs a more complete tool kit on a modest budget for projects like this off grid trailer based remote homestead system. The 12v charger and Lithium batteries make this a fairly good and complete power tool system for use when there is no regular power grid available.
