How to add outlets to a house with plaster walls

I just bought a Porter cable 18v Ni-cad powered cordless tool set. Now I noticed that the battery pack on the lithium ion powered set, is identical to the Ni-cad battery pack. My question is, can I use a Li-ion battery pack in my Ni-cad tools, or will it ruin them?

Cordless, 18v, lithium ion. For makita i would buy the compact drill, impact, and the LXT recip saw. For ridgid i would get the x4 5 tool combo. I want to no which is better because im thinking about buying one of these companies. Any help, feedback, personal problems/info is needed/wanted/much appreciated. Im a soon to be plumber.
